“RSPB Planning Application Receives Endorsement from Friends of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs”
The Friends of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, a highly respected conservation charity with almost 50 years of experience operating in and around the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park, has announced its support for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds’ (RSPB) planning application. This application aims to advance their Wards Reserve project to the next stage.
The RSPB’s current woodland trails and boardwalk have greatly improved the visitor experience and have become popular among both the general public and avid birdwatchers. The proposed hub and Gartocharn link path are the next logical steps in creating a top-quality conservation and educational destination, worthy of the National Park and its internationally designated wetland and woodland habitats at the mouth of the River Endrick. These planned facilities will not only enhance the visitor experience at Wards, but also provide the RSPB with the necessary revenue to make the reserve truly sustainable.
The addition of a new footpath will also attract more visitors to the Wards hub, making it a regular coffee stop for walkers on a superb off-road circular route that includes Gartocharn village, Aber, and the loch shore. This increase in footfall will not only benefit the local community, but also local businesses in Gartocharn. Furthermore, this project marks an important milestone in the Friends’ aspiration for a round Loch Lomond walking trail and, for this reason alone, it should be given top priority by the National Park.
The Friends have full confidence in the RSPB’s professional approach to this project and eagerly anticipate its completion. According to John Urquhart, Chair of the Friends, “This is fantastic news for the National Park, its visitors, and residents. The Friends fully support this application and believe it will greatly benefit the area. As a key wintering site for migratory geese and a nesting ground for ospreys, which travel all the way from Africa, RSPB Wards is an internationally recognized nature reserve. It is one of the country’s leading conservation hotspots and the application should be given full consideration by the planners, as it will strengthen the conservation and education efforts in this beautiful corner of the Loch Lomond basin.”
