Advancing Digital Battery Passport Initiative Highlighted at BASE Project’s 2nd General Assembly

The BASE Project recently celebrated a significant milestone with its 2nd General Assembly, held on February 12-13 at the Hyatt Regency in Manchester, UK. Hosted by Technovative Solutions Limited (TVS), the event brought together key consortium partners to advance the Digital Battery Passport (DBP) initiative. This initiative aims to create a more transparent, sustainable, and circular battery supply chain.

Over the course of two days, the event featured discussions on the progress of the Digital Battery Passport project, including functional requirements, reference architecture, circularity indexes, use case presentations, sustainability vision, project management, risk assessment, and dissemination and communication among the consortium partners.

Farhadur Arifin, Technical Manager of the BASE Project at Technovative Solutions Limited, stated that “a frozen, optimised BASE platform and architecture design along with finalised BASE system specifications and KPIs are the major milestones in this time-frame” in regards to the project’s progress.

Nineteen partner organisations from twelve different countries are working on the project. Together, they are collaborating on nine work packages to ensure the success of the project. The project supports the European DPP initiative, with a focus on transparency and sustainability. Its goal is to redefine how batteries are perceived, produced, and utilised.

The BASE project includes use cases in the automotive industry, such as E-bus EV platform production for MARCEDES-BENZ and frugal EV platform production for FORD Motors, as well as in the marine and stationary industries.

Farhadur Arifin also highlighted the active participation of all partners in the workshops and presentations, stating that they have proposed numerous recommendations essential for the effective implementation of solutions. The BASE consortium is also planning to put forward several suggestions and recommendations to the European Commission to enhance the clarity of battery regulation.

BASE is a 3-year long project under the call “HORIZON-CL5-2023-D2-02-03: Creating a digital passport to track battery materials, optimise battery performance and life, validate recycling, and promote a new business model based on data sharing (Batt4EU Partnership).” By leveraging digital passport technology, BASE is redefining the battery value chain—enhancing transparency, optimising performance, and enabling responsible recycling. As the project progresses, it continues to align with Europe’s push for a sustainable and data-driven battery ecosystem.

The project has received funding from the Horizon Europe Framework Programme (HORIZON) Research and Innovation Actions under grant agreement No 101157200.
