Grants Provided to Assist Social Housing Residents in Obtaining Training Opportunities
Northern Housing Consortium Launches Tenant Bursary Scheme to Support Training Expenses
On Tuesday, May 20th 2025, the Northern Housing Consortium (NHC) announced the launch of its new tenant bursary scheme, Unlocking Success. The scheme aims to provide financial support to individuals living in homes rented from social housing providers, enabling them to access training opportunities.
Through this initiative, the NHC will be offering £500 cash bursaries to help cover the costs associated with training. This can include expenses such as course fees, travel, equipment, childcare, and even living expenses.
Since its inception in 2019, Unlocking Success has already provided over £53,000 in funding to support 136 individuals living in social housing. This has allowed them to pursue their ambitions by accessing education and training opportunities.
Tracy Harrison, Chief Executive of the Northern Housing Consortium, expressed the importance of this bursary scheme, stating, “At a time when living costs are soaring and incomes are being squeezed, an award of £500 could make a huge difference. We know that costs for things like equipment, travel, or even childcare can be a barrier that prevents people on low incomes from accessing training. Our bursary scheme helps ease that burden and has already supported over 130 people. The awards can make a real difference to people’s lives.”
Applications for Unlocking Success awards are now open and will close on Monday, June 30th. The application process is quick and easy. Landlords, who are full or affiliate members of the NHC, can nominate an individual living in a home they own or manage (they do not have to be named on the tenancy but must be aged over 16) for the award by filling in a short form, which should only take five minutes. The person nominated will then be asked to send a written pitch or video explaining why they need the funding to support their training or education. Applications can be submitted through the Unlocking Success website.
