Join the York Carers Centre in Celebrating Carers Week 2025

York Carers Centre to host series of events for Carers Week 2025, promoting the theme of ‘Caring About Equality’

Carers Week is an annual campaign led by Carers UK, with the support of other charities, to raise awareness of unpaid carers in the UK and the challenges they face. This year’s theme, ‘Caring About Equality’, aims to highlight the inequalities facing carers and the steps needed to create a fairer society for them.

At York Carers Centre, our mission is to promote equality for carers of all ages, starting from the age of 5. We believe that every carer deserves to feel supported, connected, and empowered to lead a fulfilling life, regardless of their personal circumstances.

Studies have shown that carers often experience poorer mental and physical health compared to non-carers. This is especially true for younger carers, who may suffer from poorer mental health, and older carers, who may experience poorer physical health. Caring responsibilities can also have a negative impact on employment, leading to lower earnings, reduced pension provision, and increased financial strain. Access to support services can also be unequal, with some groups facing barriers in receiving help. Caring can also lead to social isolation and loneliness.

In recognition of Carers Week, we have organized a series of free activities to bring carers together, build friendships, and combat isolation and loneliness. These activities are also a way to acknowledge the important role carers play in our communities and offer them support.

We are proud to support young carers and young adult carers by helping them recognize the valuable skills they have developed through caring. By showing them how these skills can translate into the workplace, we empower them to build confidence, pursue meaningful careers, and reach their full potential.

We have a full line-up of activities planned, including a special celebration event on Wednesday 11 June in Museum Gardens from 10 am to 6 pm. Carers, along with their friends and families, are invited to bring a picnic, enjoy games, chat with our team, and connect with other carers who understand the realities of caring. It’s a chance to meet our Carer Support Workers, share experiences, and learn more about the support available in York.

There will also be a drop-in session at our city centre office, a social group for unpaid carers called Carers Connect, volunteer and information stalls, mental health carer support groups, and more. In response to recent changes to health and disability benefits, we will also be offering appointments with our Benefits Worker on Wednesday 11 June and a Legal Clinic with Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors on Friday 13 June.

To view the full calendar of events and book activities or appointments, please email events@yorkcarerscentre.co.uk or call 01904 715 490. We encourage all unpaid carers and those interested in learning more to attend one or more of our activities and celebrate the vital role carers play in York.
