Mitti Labs Achieves Large-Scale Traceability and Cost-Efficiency in Climate Impact
Bengaluru, India – April 9th, 2025 – ClimateTech company Mitti Labs has announced its first Gold Standard certification under the Methane Emission Reduction Methodology, offering a cost-effective and traceable solution for high-impact carbon credits.
The certification milestone validates Mitti Labs’ technology-driven approach to transforming rice farming into a scalable climate action catalyst. The company has developed a rice-specific digital Rice Methane Verification (dRMV) platform that utilizes SAR technology, artificial intelligence, and field data to monitor and verify methane-reducing farming practices in real-time and at the individual farm level.
Mitti Labs’ quantification approach guarantees that every carbon credit represents a real and verifiable emission reduction through on-ground methane measurement. The company is focused on small-holder rice farmers in India, providing them with training, resources, and financial incentives to adopt practices such as Alternate Wetting and Drying, dry-seeded rice, and no-burn rice stubble management. These practices can reduce methane emissions from rice by over 50%.
Mitti Labs plans to begin issuing high-quality carbon credits in the summer of 2025 to meet the increasing demand for high-integrity, nature-based carbon credits linked to methane reductions. With methane having a high warming potential (85XCO₂e), it has become a crucial target in near-term mitigation efforts. Rice farming alone accounts for 15% of total methane emissions globally, making it an ideal focus for climate action.
Mitti Labs’ carbon credits have been distinguished for their integrity, receiving an investible grade pre-issuance rating from Sylvera, a leading carbon rating agency. This rating confirms the project’s low-risk profile and high confidence in achieving expected emission reductions. Sylvera’s assessment found the project to have robust carbon accounting systems and the ability to consistently deliver real, permanent climate benefits, in line with the highest standards for permanence, additionality, and transparency.
In addition to reducing methane emissions, the adoption of sustainable farming practices also enhances water security and builds climate resilience in one of the most water-stressed regions in the world. Alternate Wetting and Drying has been proven to reduce water consumption by up to 40% without impacting yield.
Co-founder of Mitti Labs, Devdut Dalal, stated, “We are thrilled to announce Mitti Labs’ upcoming issuance of rice-based carbon credits, a first in the world. In the coming years, we will continue to scale our impact, both to help farmers adapt to climate change and to provide carbon buyers with a cost-effective, high-integrity, scalable alternative to offset their emissions and contribute to climate change mitigation.”
Mitti Labs plans to onboard 300,000 farmers to climate-smart rice farming over the next two years. At this scale, the company’s projects are expected to reduce 1.5 million tonnes of CO₂e annually and save nearly 400 billion liters of water each year, equivalent to the annual water consumption of the city of Bengaluru. This significant impact puts Mitti Labs at the forefront of global climate solutions, further driving its mission to leverage SAR technology and sustainable farming practices to mitigate climate change.
