“Revolutionizing Mobility for the Visually Impaired: The Impact of AI and Private Industry Backing on Travel Hands”

London-based charity Travel Hands is making strides in improving accessibility and social inclusion for Visually Impaired People (VIPs) in the city. With a team of trained sighted guides known as Travel Hands Volunteers, the organisation provides VIPs with guided assistance through its website and mobile app.

But Travel Hands is not stopping there. The charity is harnessing cutting-edge technology to enhance its services, with an upcoming integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into its application. This feature will allow VIPs to book their journey simply by speaking into the app, describing their destination, time, and preferences. The AI will then interpret their request, identify available Travel Hands Guides nearby, plan the best route, and provide real-time updates through spoken feedback.

“Our mission at Travel Hands is to make urban travel seamless for VIPs, and our new AI-powered feature is a major step towards achieving that goal,” said Ishan Jha, Founder and CEO of Travel Hands.

The AI integration will also bring several other benefits, such as smart matching to pair VIPs with the most suitable guides, real-time journey tracking for both VIPs and guides, and optimized route planning to minimize detours and enhance travel efficiency. This will all lead to enhanced coordination between volunteers and VIPs, making the journey stress-free and secure.

Travel Hands, which operates exclusively in London, offers individuals the opportunity to sign up as either a volunteer or a VIP. Volunteers undergo training to ensure they can provide effective support, helping VIPs reach their destinations with confidence and ease. Since its launch, the organisation has facilitated countless journeys, strengthening the independence of visually impaired people and promoting community engagement.

The impactful work of Travel Hands has garnered strong industry support, with the European Space Agency (ESA) playing a crucial role in the development of its journey-tracking technology. This collaboration ensures the highest levels of safety and efficiency in guided travel.

Additionally, Travel Hands has been selected as a specialised project in JPMorganChase’s Tech for Social Good program, receiving support from a team of talented and experienced software developers and data experts. This partnership is a testament to the importance of inclusive mobility and the role of technology in empowering visually impaired people.

“With AI integration and continued support from esteemed partners like ESA and JPMorganChase, we are taking significant steps toward a future where VIPs can navigate cities effortlessly,” added Jha.

As Travel Hands continues to grow and innovate, the organisation invites individuals and corporations to join its mission. From signing up as a volunteer to supporting the cause or spreading awareness, everyone can play a part in making urban travel more inclusive.
