UK Football Fans Express Growing Concerns over Fossil Fuel Investment in Their Beloved Teams, According to New Study

London, UK – As concerns around the environmental impact of football clubs continue to grow, a recent survey has revealed that almost half of football fans would feel uneasy, sad, or frustrated if their club partnered or received sponsorship from a fossil fuel company. The survey, commissioned by clean energy experts egg, also found that 38% of people believe clubs should be doing more to offset the damage caused by fossil fuel investment.

The survey, conducted on March 28th, 2025, revealed that the younger generation, specifically Gen Z, is the most passionate about the issue of fossil fuel investment in football. 76% of Gen Z respondents agreed that larger clubs benefiting from fossil fuel wealth need to step up, compared to 72% of Millennials and 48% of Boomers.

As society becomes increasingly aware of the importance of sustainable living, only 11% of fans believe that football clubs are going above and beyond with their sustainable measures. This sentiment was strongest among Boomers and Gen X, with 48% and 42% respectively believing that clubs should adopt more sustainable practices, compared to 32% of Gen Z and 34% of Millennials.

When it comes to club spending, the survey found that 64% of fans believe sustainability programs and stadium upgrades should be the top priority for clubs in the future. They also expressed a desire for less money to be spent on players’ salaries (37%), player transfers (29%), and executive staff salaries (27%).

In addition, nearly half of fans (48%) expressed a desire for more say in how their club is run. The survey also revealed the top three things people would do if they were a football club owner for a day: reduce ticket prices (53%), invest more money in youth academies (36%), and offer free tickets to those who can’t afford them (32%).

Looking towards the future, 22% of fans listed making football stadiums solar powered as one of the top five changes they would like to see their club make by 2030. Other top changes included better recycling facilities and more sustainable travel for players.

Chris Houghton, CEO of egg, stated, “With fans demanding clubs to rethink their spending to prioritize people and the planet, the future is looking green.”
