You Can Now Lease an EV for Less Than a Central London Travelcard

Last Updated on:

Dacia Spring leasing starts at £112/month via The Electric Car Scheme*

TfL Zone 1-2 travelcard costs £171.70/month

Cheaper than premium Sky TV and luxury gyms in the capital

Leasing an electric vehicle has officially become more cost-effective than many routine London expenses, including public transport, TV subscriptions, and even gym memberships.

The Dacia Spring, with a battery range of roughly 140 miles, is now available on a salary sacrifice basis from just £112 per month through The Electric Car Scheme. That price includes servicing, maintenance, MOT, and tyres, based on a 5,000-mile annual allowance over a four-year agreement. By comparison, a Transport for London monthly travelcard covering Zones 1-2 will set you back £171.70.

Many Londoners also pay more for luxury home entertainment and fitness. A full-feature Sky TV bundle including movies, sport, and streaming can cost up to £125 each month, and some Virgin Active memberships—like the one in Bromley—can run as high as £119.99.

A recent survey by The Electric Car Scheme found that 54% of people consider affordability the number-one obstacle to EV ownership—surpassing other concerns such as charging infrastructure, reliability, and range.

Used EVs from Under £200/Month

For those looking to cut costs even further, the second-hand EV market offers additional savings. These pre-owned models already represent about half of all Electric Car Scheme leases. You can get a used FIAT 500E for £193 per month or a MINI ELECTRIC for £198.

CEO and Co-Founder Thom Groot commented:

“Electric Vehicles are getting more affordable and therefore accessible every day and this effect is only set to gather pace as more people make the leap to an EV and as more models become available on the second-hand market. We expect March to be a record month for EV uptake, potentially topping 35% of all new car sales for the very first time, and at prices such as this it is hardly a surprise, especially considering the upcoming increases in Road Tax for petrol and diesel models.

We know that the main concern for drivers is, affordability, which was the biggest barrier for 54% of Brits, way out in front of any concerns around range, reliability or resale value. This is why we started The Electric Car Scheme, to make EVs more affordable and help increase uptake ahead of the coming phase-out of traditional cars.”
