Motorists are being strongly advised to review their vehicle’s number plates to eliminate the risk of incurring hefty fines or failing their MOT test.

Experts at National Numbers, a leading provider of personalized registrations, have cautioned drivers to ensure their number plates comply with the latest road regulations. This is especially important for those who purchased a new vehicle or installed new plates after September 2021, when the law underwent changes.

The revised regulations prohibit the use of number plates with printed 3D-style digits or two-tone effects, including carbon fibre designs with black and grey lettering. Instead, the updated rules require only solid black digits to provide a clear contrast between the background and the letters. This distinction aids Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras in accurately identifying vehicles on the road, even at high speeds and during nighttime.

All newly produced number plates must meet the enhanced British Standard BS AU 145e, which replaced BS AU 145d two years ago. The implementation of this standard aims to address concerns regarding road safety and law enforcement. Additionally, plates manufactured according to the new standard offer increased resistance to abrasion, ensuring prolonged durability against dirt, road grime, and jet-washing.

“Considering that these changes have been in effect since late 2021, it is unlikely that traffic police will be lenient with individuals claiming ignorance after being pulled over. That is why National Numbers urges every driver to ensure their number plates comply with the law.”

Motorists caught with incorrectly displayed number plates may face fines of up to £1,000, and their vehicle could fail the MOT test. In some cases, the registration number may be permanently revoked.

Fortunately, there are various legal options available for drivers seeking replacement plates. Traditional acrylic number plates with solid black printed digits, widely used and compliant with the new regulations, offer clear visibility and legibility.

An increasing number of drivers are opting for 3D and 4D plates, often referred to as gel digits and solid black acrylic digits, respectively. These alternatives provide a distinctive finish while remaining within the boundaries of the law, as long as the digits cannot be easily removed.
