Veterinary Surgeon decides to run half marathon for son born prematurely

The highly anticipated Greenham Common Half Marathon and 10K event, set to take place on February 25th, has officially sold out. The inaugural event, aimed at raising significant funds for special care babies in Berkshire and Hampshire, has garnered immense support from the local community and beyond.

With 300 participants signed up and generous support from corporate sponsors, the event is poised for success. Runners will have the opportunity to experience meticulously designed routes that showcase iconic landmarks such as The Fire Plane, The Control Tower, and monumental bunkers that once housed nuclear missiles.

The event has attracted support from prominent sponsors, with Bloor Homes sponsoring the eco-friendly wooden medals and David Lloyd Club, Newbury, sponsoring the trophies. David Lloyd Club is not only contributing as a sponsor, but also fielding a team of ten runners. Local businesses are also expected to join in as sponsors, further adding to the collective effort.

The Veterinary Hospital in Hungerford has entered a team of 18 runners dedicated to raising £1000 for New Life, a charity that supports premature and very sick babies. Luke Harris, a Veterinary Surgeon at The Veterinary Hospital, and his wife Emily, who have personally experienced the challenges of having a premature baby, are passionate about supporting the cause. Harris shares, “Teddy, born six weeks early in February 2023, needed specialized care at the neonatal unit in The Great Western Hospital, Swindon. We are immensely grateful for the care he received, and by raising funds for New Life, we hope to assist other families facing similar situations.” New Life has funded hot cots for several hospitals and continues to provide specialist neonatal equipment for facilities such as The Great Western Hospital in Swindon.

The founder of New Life, Trevor Goodall, explains the organization’s mission to “provide premature and very sick babies with the best start in life.” With a track record of raising over £1.5 million and benefiting more than 20 neonatal units, New Life has positively impacted the lives of over 1,000 premature babies.
